They add the top two runners from Indian Springs next year, Samantha Roush and Brooke Werstler, to an already good team.

Actually, if I am not mistaken, I think there are 5 really good 8th grade girls moving up next year, lots of potential

Indian Springs had (3) 8th graders and (2) 7th graders as their top 5 this year. We know for a fact that Samantha and Brooke will run for the high school. We
aren't sure if the other 8th grader will run. She's an excellent swimmer and may focus on swimming instead. The high school coaches are anxiously
awaiting the arrival of the two 7th graders in the fall of 2011 as well...my daughter being one of them

Brooke Werstler I thought was moving to another school district?
Anyway it is hard to determine what will be, with MS as they enter HS the days of multi sport participation begins its track to single sports. It is also hard to believe but kids just don't get excited about being on a team that has a chance to go to the state meet. If that was true Carroll would never get beat, as those Soccer players would run XC and the same could be true for Homestead, Northrop and countless other school programs. I would imagine that those schools who were down this year for any reason will be back next season, so no free tickets.

I don't know where the confusion is, I know there were more 8th grade girls at isms last year, they may not have been in the "top 5" but does
that mean we discount them? I believe that the other (2) ran 7 & 8 for the team most of the time. It is OK to be excited about your "top" runners
but don't forget the others help push them to be there, and is the coach NOT excited to be getting the other (2) girls? Reread about Sage " Sage
Knopp of Central Noble didn't excel as a middle school runner". If you and the HS coaches believe that you only need and train the top 5 you are
really missing out, from my experience you don't discount ANY runner, no matter where they are running for the team, you just never know when they may
shine.
on a side note, I heard that Brooke and several of the other girls are already training and running at nationals next month, good luck girls!

True, a good coach will keep all of his team fired up and feeling like a part of the team, you just never know where your runners will come from or go to in a
year's time! Best to keep an eye on all those incoming girls and make them all feel like part of the team and training, as really, you don't know who
will have a good or bad year.

Feel free to take all the shots at me you want, but comments such as "is the coach NOT excited to be getting the other (2) girls?" or "a good
coach will keep all of his team fired up and feeling like a part of the team" suggests that the coaches in Columbia City do not care about any runners
other than the top 5. That couldn't be further from the truth. If my posts suggested that in any way, I truly regret that. However, in sports in general,
we know that there are athletes who are standouts and there is nothing wrong with celebrating excellence. That is what I was trying to do. If it came across
any different, that's my fault, not the coaches.

In looking at the ISMS girls that ran at the AAU District meet it appears that the only qualification to go to nationals is to finish...is that correct? the
times appeared average at best.

AAU versus USATF | #12 | ||

AAU has only a district then to National meet where USATF has a Association (state level) then a Region (IL and IN) then Nationals. USATF you need to be in a
certain finish top 20 I believe to progress unless your on a team top 3. I always found that competition was in USATF in this area of the country and it
becomes a cost decision on where Nationals are held. USATF is in Reno NV 2009 and I believe AAU Orlando FL so pick your vacation mecca. USATF moves back to
the midwest next year, so more local teams might consider. Of course Foot Locker adds to the mix, so HS runners should consider that direction versus either
USATF or AAU.
Years ago we took teams not only to USATF Nationals in Chicago, but Miami, Atlanta, New Mexico, Indianapolis, Connecticut so we did get around. In 2006 we took a team to Orlando for AAU Like I said schedule and economics plays a role, not sure how many runners AAU gets in NW Indiana. |
